Kettler HKS Vito XL Elliptical Cross Trainer Review

I retired my ancient and boring compact bicycle (also Kettler) in favour of a Cross Trainer after if became my favourite machine at the gym. I am not a fitness fanatic but enjoy a 30-45 min daily workout and in winter, this is as good as it gets. When it comes to home machines, it pays to purchase the best model you can afford. This Trainer mimics the movements of cycling (upright) walking and stepping in one … and it goes backwards too! The handles provide a decent upper body workout as well. It behaves like a professional machine, very smooth, quiet and sturdy. Foot plates are adjustable and resistance levels can be changed while you exercise. The training computer display is simple to use, easy to read and informative, it even tells you the temperature! I like the bottle holder in front, very handy. Accessories recommended: cardio pulse set. The hand grip sensors take a while to read pulse and as with many machines like this, not entirely accurate. I use a Polar belt & watch which are very reliable. Assembly can be tricky, reading the instructions 2-3 times is recommended plus a little patience. All worth it in the end!

Excellent, quiet elliptical that exceeds expectations! – Steve D. –
First, I did extensive research for the right elliptical for less than ,300. The Kettler Vito XL so far lives up to all of the positive comments I’d found on it. It’s an excellent elliptical machine that’s exceeded my expectations so far. My wife and I have each used the machine about once a day since we purchased it 3 weeks ago, and we are extremely pleased with its performance. The machine is so quiet, yet quite sturdy (no wobbling!!) and provides very useful cardio feedback and info on energy burned, mph, rpms … even room temperature! Relatively small footprint, too, since we live in a one-bedroom apartment, and not too shabby to look at, either. The stride is 16″, but for us that’s more than fine, since I’m 5’8″ tall and my wife is 5’3″ tall. The movement feels very natural, much like cross-country skiing. The upper body workout is great, too, and provides excellent stretching of the upper limbs. I had a bit of a problem with ‘frozen shoulder’, but since using the Kettler elliptical, I have almost no shoulder pain, which is a very pleasant added surprise to what is turning out to be a very wise purchase.

The good:
– The instructions for assembly are excellent. It comes with a small blister pack with nuts, bolts and washers divided up by assembly step.
– It really is quiet like they claim. I can watch TV easily while running a couple of miles on it, without bugging anyone else.
– The display device it comes with provides good pulse feedback, and has a decent choice of builtin programs.
– The resistance and incline controls change smoothly.
– The manual says that tightening every bolt thoroughly is important. It’s quite true.
– Just assembling it gives you the feeling of good engineering. Although its footprint isn’t as big as one might expect, it’s very stable, even during an intense workout.
– The wheels in the front are quite helpful.

The somewhat less good:
– It’d be really really neat if. instead of the audio pass through, it had a USB hub.
– If it squeaks at first, you might have missed the lowest of the four bolts that holds in the mast part, which came already inserted under the flywheel housing. It can be easy to miss.

Service department useless – Harrison Fisk –
We received a Sole E35 a bit after Christmas 2009. When we put it together and it immediately made this horrible loud thunking noise on each rotation which caused the entire unit to vibrate.

We reported the problem to Sole service around 10 days after placing the order which is where all of the problems began. Sole support is a nightmare to deal with. They don’t answer the phone, won’t return voice mails, and even claimed that they had never spoken with me once.

They do support by sending random parts and hoping that they fix the problem. After 4 cycles of the technician failing to fix the problem since they weren’t the right parts, they finally accepted it as unfixable. It took 3 months to get to this point since the technician was about 6 hours from here and only was available to service us for 1 day every 2 weeks.

After going through this and not having a working elliptical (it has actually gotten worse due to some technician’s not doing things right), we wanted our money back. However Sole claims that since it isn’t within a 30-day window, they can’t give a refund. It took longer than 30 days to get the first technician onsite due to Sole support sucking.

I would highly recommend you avoid buying anything from this company.

Nice machine. Very heavy to remove out of the shipping carton. Tools that the manufacturer supplied were not adequate. Machine assembled in about one hour. Hard to move–very heavy! Machine does appear to operate very nicely. We tried this machine in a Dick’s sporting goods store, but no financing available. Amazon offered six months free financing with amazon card. We have this machine in a finished basement with a ceiling height of six and a half feet. This is the minumum height you will need w/o hitting your head on the ceiling! Electronic display seems a bit cheap, but functional. The main focus of my purchase was the stability of the machine while operating. Cheaper models will shake and seem like they are falling apart while using. This machine is very solid and comes with a respectable warranty.

Sole also comes with the best warranty in this price range: 5 yrs parts & electronics & 2 yrs labor- no one else comes close. I went to Dick’s and tried out this and the E25 and the difference was astounding: the E35 is so much smoother, it just feels sturdy and well-made, like a club-quality elliptical. Putting it together was a little time-consuming but not that difficult as the main part is put together- you basically attach the handles, console and a bunch of covers over the joints. I’ve been using it for 3 weeks now, 4-5x’s a week and it is very quiet and smooth- I recommend this to anyone who doesn’t have the budget for the K+ machines.

I got this to finish off my home gym. The owner of the store told me that he uses this every day.

The person who earlier stated that it’s like yoga stretches is right. It’s very similar in increasing your range of motion, and possibly your ability to move around easier and with less pain if you have a problem with stiffness.

It’s great to use before and/or after aerobic exercise or alone, for those who just need a great stretch. The machine is flexible enough so you can be a little creative in how you do the stretches. You do need to be cautious. It comes with a safety strap. You wouldn’t want to tumble off or have the machine plop on top of you. It isn’t terribly heavy (I can move it and I’m a smaller-sized woman), but you don’t want to get careless with it.

All-in-all, this is an excellent way to stretch, for whatever reason you are stretching, before, after, or instead of other exercise. I recommend it highly!

Good but Pricey – Cheryl M. Todd –
This is a good and solid machine that’s well made but is overpriced. Some of the stretching exercises shown on the panel are not very worthwhile but it does seem to help my back which is the reason I bought it. I just think that a basic stationary piece of equipment like this should be priced in the 0-0 range max. Since it’s quality was rated high I bought it because I don’t want to have to replace a piece of junk but writing a check for 0+ was painful…in the wallet not the back.

Excellant product that offers outstanding lower back releif. Only problem is the price, which tends to be far more than what is should take to manufacture and sell at a profit. Nonetheless, if you have lower back disk and muscle pain, and have found little other relief, this is worth exploring. I used it at my gym for over a year before purchasing.

Worth the $ – Academy Consulting –
This wonderful machine creates Yoga-like results without all the poses. The easiest way I know to limber up and loosen up. The Precor is ten minutes of feeling great — as a warm up pre-sports, a cool-down after work-outs, or just a quick fitness-fix on its own.

Our machine came with a split foot rest ( urrgh!) but the supplier quickly replaced it without hassle. Do check the equipment carefully before assembly . . not all machines arrive in perfect condition.

Machine looks new. It works great with the exception of the heart rate monitor. I have used the machine 4 times and the heart rate monitor worked for three of these 45 minute work outs & now has begun to stop working. I need to contact shipper to see what he can do to get this problem fixed.
